IFC Empowers Women Designers

It’s been less than two years since Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC) was established, but it already had 12 Chapters with more than 150 members. To celebrate this year’s Kartini’s Day, IFC held a talk show called “Wanita Kreatif dan Mandiri” (20/4). Through the event, IFC expressed its commitment to support Indonesian women in the fashion industry.

IFC members are dominated by women and IFC sees itself as a platform for these women to develop their fashion businesses. During the talk show called “Wanita Kreatif dan Mandiri” (20/4), Hannie Hananto as the Local Chairman of IFC Jakarta said that IFC Jakarta alone has 23 designers as members and 16 of them are women. The designer Wignyo Rahadi also shared how IFC have been empowering craftswomen in many different areas.

One of them is in Sukabumi, where the women who used to work making bricks are now making woven fabric instead. “After the 2000’s, many designers began to work directly with the craftswomen which resulted in more production,” said Wignyo.

For the future, IFC plans to held International Ethical Fashion. Taruna Kusmayadi as the National Chairman of IFC said that the event will be the more “humane” version of a fashion week, where the fortune of the craftsmen must be empowered as well.

The talk show was later followed by a trunk show. The trunk show displayed eight designers’ works, including Fitri Aulia, Hannie Hananto, Najua Yanti, Priscilla Saputro, and Wignyo Rahadi. It also displayed collections from Inge Chu and Ina Priyono as representatives of IFC Semarang, and Saffana from IFC Surabaya. These collections presented traditional and ethnic materials in modern designs. As what Wignyo said, women fashion today is able to preserve the ethnic essence yet is becoming more dynamic following the current development. It always adjusts to the function and women’s activities without getting rid of the ethnic essence.

“Wanita Kreatif dan Mandiri” also presents a fashion exhibition by IFC designers, which is held from April 14th – 27th, 2017 at Alun Alun Grand Indonesia, West Mall 3rd Floor.
