Rani Hatta: The "Crossing" of Masculine-Feminine Looks in One Collection

More monochrome colors came from Rani Hatta’s collection at the Muslim Fashion Festival (MUFFEST) 2017. This time the color combination was inspired by the zebra crossing. Therefore, she named the collection “Crossing.” 

Rani Hatta added the color red to this collection which gives a fresh impression to her typical monochrome style. These colors were then put into oversized sweaters, vests, coats, bomber jackets, and skirts. Rani Hatta also used striated fabric and striped webbing tapes to add more illustrations of zebra cross.

But Rani Hatta herself said that the whole collection wasn’t merely about zebra crossing. The word “crossing” also represents the mix of feminine and masculine senses in the collection. Rani Hatta combined bomber jackets and hoodies, which generally have a masculine connotation, with the girly tutu skirts. 

Along with the masculine-feminine looks, Rani Hatta applied the “Brave” makeup look from Wardah. This makeup look was perfect to go along with the fearless and boyish styling of Rani Hatta’s collection. She said that she hoped these looks as a whole would be a message for people to be fearless in mix-and-matching outfits.

It’s pretty clear that Rani Hatta stays true to her character with her typical monochrome-colored boyish design. But while the theme is new and she added a new bright color to this look, the runway looks themselves were made pretty similar with her previous fashion show at the Jakarta Fashion Week 2017. With the styling using baseball caps and turtleneck sweaters, this runway seemed like they’re supposed to be the continuation of Rani Hatta’s “Youth” runway looks and made the collection appeared repetitive.

Despite the similar styling of the runway looks, the collection itself came up with fresh designs along with braver and more experimental mix and matches. Which suits perfectly with what Rani Hatta tries to say through this collection.
